What's On?

There's plenty to do and see at BAFF 2017 whilst you sip, slurp and scoff your way around the markets!

Tom and Henry Herbert from The Hobbs House Bakery
Saturday 1st April / Newgate Centre

The wonderful Tom and Henry Herbert (stars of Channel 4’s Fabulous Baker Brothers) make a welcome return to BAFF, but this time they're are inviting you into the kitchen. Learn how to make soda bread and flavoured butter then choose your perfect filling for the ultimate sandwich – the brothers think a lightly fried mackerel fillet would be perfect. Or if you fancy making your own lunch the boys will teach you how to make a ‘posh kebab’ from scratch. Sumptuous soft flatbreads and marinated local lamb with all of the trimmings – fabulous!

Tom is a fifth generation baker, and won ‘Young Baker of the Year’ straight out of baking college. He had an ambition to ‘do for bread, what Rick Stein had done for fish’ and in the intervening years has gone on to collect numerous awards with Hobbs House Bakery, has been featured in the aforementioned Rick Stein’s Food Heroes (as a Super Food Hero!), and has also featured in the Independent’s top 50 food shops.

Henry may be the youngest of this baking dynasty, but he has certainly made his mark on the culinary world. Another fifth generation baker, he is also an enthusiastic butcher, and is passionate about carefully sourced good quality seasonal ingredients. From his role as Head Chef of Clerkenwell's award winning pub, The Coach & Horses, to running Hobbs House Butchery for two years, to teaching in the cookery school, and now in his role of Retail Director at Hobbs House, Henry is passionate about passing on his love of all things bread and meat.

The Big Comedy Feast
Saturday 1st April, 7.30pm (doors 7pm) / Town Hall

The festival has joined forces with Manford’s Comedy Club to bring you a night of side-splitting stand-up and fabulous food (it is April Fool’s Day after all…).

Irish stand-up, Chris Kent, will open the night. Hailing from ‘The Rebel County’ (That’s Cork for anyone outside Ireland), Chris gave up the day job as an electrician to pursue his calling in comedy. His TV credits include ‘The Stand Ups’ and ‘Russell Howard’s Stand Up Central’, and he has also had sell-out shows at The Edinburgh Festival and Perth Fringe. He brought his fourth solo show ‘Stop Stalling’ to the Edinburgh Festival. He returned home after once again miscalculating his final shop and leaving behind half a bottle of shower gel and a box of cornflakes (unopened), and taking with him only resentment for the landlord that charged seven times the rent for an apartment that couldn’t possibly have been up any more stairs… In 2016 Chris performed at the Perth Fringe. It was warm. He took a break from Edinburgh, assuming that “everybody in the world would be in Rio for the Olympics”. He did however go on to do his first Irish tour with ‘Stop Stalling’, performing to sell-out crowds. It was cold. Chris is currently working on his fifth hour, which he will be bringing to the Edinburgh Festival and beyond in 2017.

Headlining will be Dave Johns, star of the critically acclaimed Ken Loach film ‘I, Daniel Blake’ which has just recently won the BAFTA for 'Outstanding Britsh Film'. Dave is one of the most respected and best loved comedians working on the British comedy circuit today, having performed extensively in UK comedy clubs, as well as in comedy clubs and at festivals worldwide for nearly 3 decades. He has been a regular on shows such as ‘Never Mind the Buzzcocks’, ‘ 8 Out of Ten Cats’ and ‘ Alan Davies As Yet Untitled’ and has appeared on the West End stage in ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest’, alongside Christian Slater. He also makes regular guest appearances with one of the longest running and highly acclaimed comedy improvisation teams, ‘The Comedy Store Players’.

Matt Reed will be MC for the evening. Born and bred in Sunderland, Matt's affable style has won him fans across the UK. He effortlessly plays with the crowd with a natural rapport that is found in few comics. Matt, always ready, never disappointing will make a good gig - great. As pleasant as he is wonderfully brutal, Matt is a welcome addition to any comedy night entertaining the crowd while skilfully destroying any heckler that crosses his path.

The Urban Rajah Pop-up Café will be open throughout the night, serving delicious Pavs.

£10 early bird / £12.50 full price

Tickets can be booked on the phone or in person at Gala Durham (03000 266600) or Bishop Auckland Town Hall (0300 0269524) or by using the following link:

Tasty Tours

For the first time ever, foodies at the Bishop Auckland Food Festival will be given the chance to tour some of Durham’s finest producers thanks to a unique partnership between the festival and Visit County Durham’s Taste Durham scheme.

The guided tour will take festival-goers on a culinary journey across the county, visiting some of Durham’s most exciting local producers. Participants will be picked up by the Tasty Tours bus from the festival site at 12pm on Sunday 2nd April and whisked off for a unique afternoon of foodie fun.

The tour will start with an exclusive preview visit to McColls Brewery, which officially opens later this spring. This new addition to the growing North East brewery scene will be producing beers that are unashamedly British. Guests of BAFF’s Tasty Tours will be some of the first to visit this beautiful little brewery in Teesdale and will have the opportunity to try a few samples and even take home a beer or two.

Next, the tour will move on to Bradley Burn Farm Shop. Nestled in the Durham Dales countryside, the farm shop is housed in a beautiful log cabin overlooking the burn flowing past. Here there will be the opportunity to taste fine local cheeses paired with chutney and there will also be a jar of Bradley Burn’s own chutney to take home.

And the last stop on the tour will take guests to Cross Lanes Organic Farm. The farm is run and built entirely on eco principles with organic, local and green thinking at the heart of everything they do. Here there will be the opportunity to participate in a sausage making masterclass, which you then get to take home. There will also be 10% off any meat purchased on the day.

Tickets for the tour are £30, but are very limited. Meet the Tasty Tours rep at the Town Hall at 11.45am. You can use the following link:
